Johnson Building Corporation was started as a sole proprietorship in October 1989 by F. Richard Johnson as a Class 'A' Virginia General Contractor performing commercial construction work in Virginia and Maryland. We focused on interior fit-outs for retail and restaurant tenants in strip shopping centers and malls in the Metro Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Va. Areas.
By mid-1991, the success of the business required moving into commercial office space in Herndon, Va. With our staff and the financial backing of a larger St. Louis, Mo. General Contractor, we were able to take on larger interior fit-out contracts.
During 1993, our growth required a move into larger office space at the same location. We expanded our working territory into two new states: Pennsylvania and New Jersey. We also constructed four freestanding building projects that included site work as well as the building itself.
In 1994, we incorporated as Johnson Building Corporation and expanded into Delaware. Most of our work continued to be done for national or regional retail and restaurant customers. This core business growth was the result of establishing a reputation for quality work and customer satisfaction.
1996 marked the move into new offices and the addition of Ohio as a state in which the Johnson Building Corporation had successfully performed work.
In 1997 the company solidified its position as a responsible, capable, and preferred contractor with its sales volume over doubling that of 1996. Michigan, New York and North Carolina were added to states in which successful projects were completed.
By 1998 the continued rapid growth of the company necessitated moving into larger headquarters in Sterling, Va. Also, the year was highlighted by moving into two new areas of commercial construction with the building of its first two hotels (West Virginia and Pennsylvania) and its first shopping center (Salisbury, Md.). Florida, Texas and Georgia were states added to a long list of successful projects.
In 1999, we reached a high water mark with three shopping centers under construction, and restaurant projects in 10 states, including New York, Indiana, Florida, Pennsylvania and Kansas. 1999 also brought another expansion to our offices.
